Marginal Efficiency Calculator

FAQs
What is marginal efficiency in paid advertising?

Marginal efficiency in paid advertising measures the return you get from each additional dollar you spend on ads. As you increase your budget, each additional dollar yields less return than the last. Marginal efficiency helps you find the point at which additional spending stops being profitable, so you know exactly when to stop increasing your budget.

What is marginal CPA, and how is it different from blended CPA?

CPA means Cost Per Acquisition. Blended CPA divides your total ad spend by your total conversions, including customers who would have bought anyway through organic channels. Marginal CPA only counts conversions from paid ads. It is almost always higher than your blended CPA and gives you a much more accurate picture of what your paid campaigns cost per customer.

Why is my true paid CPA higher than the CPA my Ads Manager reports?

Ads Manager attributes conversions using view-through and click-through windows, so it takes credit for purchases driven by email, organic search, or direct traffic. Your true paid CPA removes organic conversions, so you only count the sales your ad spend generated. Relying on Ads Manager CPA alone can make your campaigns look more efficient than they really are.

How do I use the Marginal Efficiency Calculator?

Enter your daily ad spend, total revenue, contribution margin percentage, and your paid versus organic traffic split. Set your diminishing returns rate to reflect how your efficiency changes as spend increases. The calculator will show you your true paid CPA, your marginal return at the current spend, and the optimal daily budget before returns stop being profitable.

What should I enter as my contribution margin?

Your contribution margin is the percentage of revenue left after subtracting your cost of goods sold and variable costs, such as shipping and transaction fees. Do not include fixed costs like salaries or rent. For example, if your product sells for $100 and your variable costs are $40, your contribution margin is 60%.

What is the % Paid setting, and how do I find my paid vs. organic split?

The % Paid setting tells the calculator what percentage of your total conversions are driven by paid ads versus organic sources. To find this, look at your analytics platform and compare paid-channel conversions with total conversions over the same period. If 70% of your orders come from paid ads and 30% come from organic, email, or direct, enter 70 as your paid percentage.

What is the diminishing returns setting?

Diminishing returns reflects how quickly your ad efficiency drops as you spend more. On most ad platforms, increasing your daily budget means you start reaching less-qualified audiences, which raises your CPA over time. A higher diminishing-returns rate means your efficiency drops faster as spending increases.

How does the calculator determine my optimal daily spend?

The calculator models how your marginal return changes at each spend level, factoring in your contribution margin, paid conversion rate, and diminishing returns curve. It finds the point where the cost of the next dollar spent equals the profit generated by the conversion it drives. Spending beyond that point means you are paying more to acquire a customer than that customer contributes to your bottom line.

How is the Marginal Efficiency Calculator different from a ROAS or MER calculator?

A ROAS calculator measures revenue returned per ad dollar spent. An MER calculator looks at your total ad spend relative to total revenue across all channels. Neither of them accounts for organic lift, diminishing returns, or your actual contribution margin. The Marginal Efficiency Calculator, however, isolates your true paid performance and shows you the optimal budget before scaling becomes unprofitable.
