Fabric GSM Calculator

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how heavy a fabric is per square metre of material. A lower GSM means the fabric is lighter and thinner. A higher GSM means it is heavier and denser. Clothing brands use GSM to decide which fabric suits a product.

It depends on what you are making. 180 GSM fabric is lighter and works well for everyday t-shirts and warmer climates. 200 GSM is slightly heavier, which gives garments more structure and a more premium feel. For most standard t-shirts, 180 GSM is common.

200 GSM is in the mid-weight range. It is not considered thick, but it is noticeably heavier than a basic 140 to 160 GSM fabric. Most customers would describe a 200 GSM t-shirt as feeling solid and well-made without being too heavy to wear comfortably.

240 GSM is a heavyweight fabric. You will find it used in premium t-shirts, oversized fits, and structured sweatshirts. It holds its shape well, drapes differently than lighter fabrics, and is usually used by brands selling at a higher price.
